Nevada Traffic School
Court locations, deadlines and what the course costs in each city. Licensed by the Nevada DMV (TSS000053264), with completions reported to the DMV.
It is the refresher course the Nevada DMV licenses traffic safety schools to teach. Drivers take it for one of three reasons: a court lets them complete it so a moving violation is recorded as a non-moving one, the DMV cancels 3 demerit points from their record when they complete it voluntarily, or an insurer offers a discount for it. The course covers Nevada traffic law, defensive driving, hazard recognition, speed and lane rules, impaired and distracted driving, and licensing.
Nevada drivers with 3 to 11 demerit points can have up to 3 points cancelled by completing a DMV-licensed traffic safety course. The DMV allows this once every 12 months, and the cancellation applies only to points from the 12 months after you complete the course. A course you take for a court, as part of resolving a citation, does not also remove points.
The Nevada DMV sets the length by your record: 5 hours if you have 2 or fewer violations, 8 hours if you have 3 or more. Traffic Safety Institute offers the 5-hour course. Twelve or more points within 12 months means an automatic 6-month suspension, so the 3-point cancellation matters most before you get there.
Nevada courts accept any traffic safety school on the Nevada DMV list, and Traffic Safety Institute is on it under license TSS000053264. Each court sets its own conditions for using traffic school on a citation, such as a first violation within a set period or a limit on the points the violation carries, and its own deadline. The court named on your citation is the one to check with; the city pages below carry the published rules for the Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Reno courts.
Start with the Nevada DMV list of licensed traffic safety schools, which shows each school's license number and whether it teaches online, in a classroom or by correspondence. Then compare what is included: some schools charge extra for the audio read-along, for exam attempts or for the certificate. Traffic Safety Institute charges one course fee of $24.99, paid only after you pass; a printed certificate and online notarization are optional extras.
The course is 12 lessons, each ending with a short quiz, followed by a final exam. You can log in from any device, stop whenever you like and pick up where you left off, and the audio read-along is free. Most students finish in one sitting; the 5 hours are the DMV's required seat time.
You get your certificate of completion right away. If the course is for a court, you hand the certificate to that court before its deadline. Nevada regulations also require online students to sign a notarized statement, under penalty of perjury, that they took the exam themselves; a parent or guardian signs for a student under 18. You can use any notary or the online notarization offered at checkout, and the school keeps the statement on file for the DMV. The DMV cancels the points once your completion is reported.
Nevada law requires insurers to give drivers 55 and older a premium reduction for completing an approved traffic safety course, if the driver has no at-fault accident and the course was not required because of a violation. Younger drivers should ask their insurer, since discounts for them are voluntary and vary by company.
