Las Vegas Traffic School Questions

Can I take traffic school for a Las Vegas Justice Court ticket?

Yes, if the citation is your first traffic violation in the preceding 36 months. Under the court’s Local Rule 7.9 you indicate through the court’s online dispute system that you are not contesting, pay the civil penalty in full, and complete a traffic safety course of at least 5 hours at a school on the Nevada DMV list, with evidence of completion to the court, all within 90 calendar days of the citation date. The violation is then amended to a non-moving one with no demerit points. Traffic Safety Institute is on the DMV list (license TSS000053264). The court’s Customer Service Division confirms whether you qualify.

Can I take traffic school for a Las Vegas Municipal Court ticket?

Yes, for a moving violation worth 4 demerit points or less, if you are not contesting it, you provide a 10-year driving record with no pattern of moving violations (3 or more in a year, or 10 or more in 10 years), you pay all penalties and fees, and you give the court proof of completing a traffic safety school on the Nevada DMV list by the 90-day response date. Commercial license holders are not eligible. If you already attended traffic school in the last 12 months the court requires a Level 2 repeat-offender course, which is 8 hours; we offer the 5-hour Level 1 course only.

Is there a fee I can pay instead of the course?

Both Las Vegas courts allow a demerit point reduction fee in place of the course, paid on top of the civil penalty (at Municipal Court only for a first-occurrence 4-point violation). Neither court publishes the amount online, so ask the court before you decide. The course costs $24.99, paid only after you pass, and it also gives you the DMV’s 3-point cancellation route the next time you need it.

What is the deadline?

Ninety days. Las Vegas Justice Court counts 90 calendar days from the date the citation was issued for payment and proof of completion. Las Vegas Municipal Court uses the 90-day response date printed on the citation unless the court orders otherwise. Miss it and the original moving violation is reported to the DMV.

How does the court get my certificate?

We email your certificate of completion once you pass, pay and we verify your notarized affidavit. You hand it to the court, at Justice Court Customer Service or Municipal Court’s counters, by the deadline. We report your completion to the Nevada DMV; the court does not get it from the DMV.

Does the course also remove points from my DMV record?

Not when it is taken for a court amendment. The DMV cancels 3 demerit points only for a course taken voluntarily, once every 12 months, if you have 3 to 11 points. A court amendment already keeps the points off the record, so the two routes do not stack.

Which Las Vegas court has your ticket?

Las Vegas tickets go to one of two courts, and each has its own traffic school rules. Tickets written by Las Vegas Metro or the Nevada Highway Patrol in unincorporated Clark County go to Las Vegas Justice Court. Tickets written inside the city limits by Las Vegas Metro on a city citation go to Las Vegas Municipal Court. The court’s name is printed on your citation. Both courts accept any traffic safety school on the Nevada DMV’s list, which includes Traffic Safety Institute (license TSS000053264).

What it costs in Las Vegas

Two separate payments: one to the court, one to us.

  • The court fee — paid to the court

The civil penalty on your citation is set by the court that issued it and paid to that court. Las Vegas Justice Court and Las Vegas Municipal Court each also offer a demerit point reduction fee in place of the course, paid on top of the penalty; neither court publishes the amount online, so confirm it with the court before choosing.

  • The course fee — paid to us: $24.99

$24.99 covers the 5-hour Nevada DMV-licensed traffic safety course, the final exam with unlimited retakes, your certificate of completion, and reporting of your completion to the Nevada DMV. Start free — you only pay when you pass.

  • The deadline

Both Las Vegas courts want payment and proof of completion by the 90-day response date on the citation (Justice Court: 90 calendar days from the citation date; Municipal Court: the response date, unless the court orders otherwise). We email your certificate once we verify your notarized affidavit, and we report your completion to the Nevada DMV.

Court fees are set by the court and can change; the course fee is the only amount you pay Traffic Safety Institute.

Traffic school at each Las Vegas court

Every court sets its own conditions. These are the published rules for the courts that handle Las Vegas tickets, read from the courts' own pages and rules of practice.

Tickets written by Metro or the Nevada Highway Patrol in the unincorporated county go to the justice court. Tickets written by a city police department go to that city's municipal court. The court's name is printed on your citation.
