Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) is the 6-hour drivers ed course the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) requires of every first-time license applicant under 18. Since August 1, 2025 it replaces the 4-hour TLSAE course for teens; applicants 18 and older still take TLSAE.
Yes. Traffic Safety Institute is an FLHSMV-approved DETS course provider, and the course is accepted statewide to meet the driver education requirement for first-time license applicants under 18.
You must take DETS if you are under 18 and have never held a driver license from any state, country or jurisdiction. You do not need it if you already held a Florida learner license before August 1, 2025, if you are transferring a valid out-of-state license, or if you are 18 or older, in which case the TLSAE course applies instead.
The course costs $19.99, and you pay only after you pass the final exam. That includes the course, your electronic certificate and electronic reporting to FLHSMV. A printed certificate is optional and carries a small state fee.
The course is 8 lessons that meet the FLHSMV requirement of 6 hours, and it is 100% self-paced. Finish it in one day or over several days or weeks. Log in and out as needed; your progress is saved automatically on any phone, tablet or computer.
The final exam has 40 questions and you need 80% or higher to pass. You get 3 attempts, the questions come straight from the course material, and if you do not pass you pay nothing.
We report your completion to FLHSMV electronically as soon as you pass, and we email your certificate of completion. It can take up to 48 hours to show in the FLHSMV system; after that you can take the Class E knowledge exam for your learner license at any driver license office.
Yes. Register for free with no credit card, complete the whole course and the final exam, and pay the course fee only after you pass.
