Reno Traffic School Questions

Can I take traffic school for a Reno Municipal Court ticket?

Yes, for a violation carrying 1 to 4 demerit points, with the court’s approval first. Complete a course at a school on the Nevada DMV list (the court refers you to dmv.nv.gov for the accepted schools; Traffic Safety Institute is on it under license TSS000053264) and provide proof of completion with full payment by the 90-day response date.

Can I take traffic school for a Reno Justice Court ticket?

Yes, if the violation carries 4 or fewer points, only one moving violation was cited, there was no accident, and you have had no moving-violation conviction or traffic school in the past year. File a Traffic School Motion and pay the total due before your arraignment date, in person, by mail, or by email to RJCCitations@washoecounty.gov. Wait for the court to grant the motion: if your payment is processed first, traffic school is denied and the points go to the DMV.

What about a Sparks Justice Court ticket?

Sparks allows traffic school for 1 to 4 point violations if you have had no traffic school in the last 12 months, no accident, and the ticket was not in a school zone; Class A and B commercial licenses, mandatory-appearance citations, and reckless, aggressive or careless driving need a judge’s approval. A $25 traffic school fee is assessed when you ask, and the court links to the Nevada DMV school list.

What is the deadline?

Reno Municipal Court: the 90-day response date on the citation. Reno Justice Court: the completion date the court sets when it grants your motion, which must be filed before arraignment. Sparks Justice Court: the date the Citation Department confirms when it approves your request.

How does the court get my certificate?

We email your certificate of completion once you pass, pay and we verify your notarized affidavit. You file it with the court that granted the option, by its date. We report your completion to the Nevada DMV separately. The course costs $24.99, paid only after you pass.

Does the course also remove points from my DMV record?

Not when it is taken for a court. The DMV cancels 3 demerit points only for a course taken voluntarily, once every 12 months, if you have 3 to 11 points.

Which Reno-area court has your ticket?

Tickets written by Reno Police inside the city go to Reno Municipal Court. Tickets written by the Washoe County Sheriff or Nevada Highway Patrol go to Reno Justice Court, or to Sparks Justice Court east of the city line. The court’s name is printed on your citation. All three accept any traffic safety school on the Nevada DMV’s list, which includes Traffic Safety Institute (license TSS000053264).

What it costs in Reno

Two separate payments: one to the court, one to us.

  • The court fee — paid to the court

The civil penalty on your citation is set by the court that issued it and paid to that court. Sparks Justice Court adds a $25 traffic school fee when you request the option. Reno Justice Court denies traffic school if your payment is processed before it grants your motion, so file the motion first.

  • The course fee — paid to us: $24.99

$24.99 covers the 5-hour Nevada DMV-licensed traffic safety course, the final exam with unlimited retakes, your certificate of completion, and reporting of your completion to the Nevada DMV. Start free — you only pay when you pass.

  • The deadline

Reno Municipal Court wants proof of completion and full payment by the 90-day response date. Reno Justice Court sets your completion date when it grants the Traffic School Motion, which must be filed before your arraignment date. Sparks Justice Court confirms the date when it approves your request. We email your certificate once we verify your notarized affidavit.

Court fees are set by the court and can change; the course fee is the only amount you pay Traffic Safety Institute.

Traffic school at each Reno court

Every court sets its own conditions. These are the published rules for the courts that handle Reno tickets, read from the courts' own pages and rules of practice.

Tickets written by Metro or the Nevada Highway Patrol in the unincorporated county go to the justice court. Tickets written by a city police department go to that city's municipal court. The court's name is printed on your citation.
