How Demerit Points Work in Virginia
Every time you are convicted of a moving violation in Virginia, the DMV adds 3, 4, or 6 demerit points to your driving record, depending on how serious the offense is. Points stay active for exactly 2 years from the date you committed the offense, not the date you were convicted. The DMV acts on your total automatically:

Stricter rules apply to young drivers. If you are under 18, any demerit conviction requires a clinic, a second brings a 90-day suspension, and a third revokes your license for a year or until you turn 18. If you commit a demerit violation at age 18 or 19, a clinic is required after your first conviction.

How to Remove Points From Your Record
Completing a DMV-licensed 8-hour driver improvement clinic subtracts up to 5 demerit points from your total. If you have fewer than 5 demerit points, the balance is applied as safe driving points, which act as a buffer against future tickets (your record maxes out at +5). You can take the course voluntarily for point credit once every 2 years.
