FLHSMV notice: your required driver improvement course

If the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles sent you a letter requiring a driver improvement course, you can complete the 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course online with Traffic Safety Institute from anywhere in Florida. $28.99, nothing up front, pay after you pass.

  • FLHSMV-approved 4-hour BDI
  • 90 days from your notice
  • Completion reported to FLHSMV

Read your letter first. It names the course you must complete and your deadline. If it says the 4-hour BDI course, start here.

Which notice do you have?

FLHSMV requires a driver improvement course in these cases. Pick the one that matches your letter; you will choose the same reason when you sign up.

  • Red light

    s. 316.074(1) or 316.075(1)(c)1. Sign-up reason: Department Notice: Red Light.

Required after a conviction or no-contest plea. If adjudication was withheld, the course is required only when the court orders it.

  • Passing a stopped school bus

    s. 316.172. Sign-up reason: Department Notice: School Bus.

Required after a conviction, and also when adjudication is withheld.

  • Reckless driving

    s. 316.192. Sign-up reason: Department Notice: Reckless Driving.

Required after a conviction or no-contest plea; with adjudication withheld, only when the court orders it.

  • Highway racing or racing spectator

    s. 316.191. Sign-up reason: Department Notice: Highway Racing or Racing Spectator.

Same rule as red light and reckless driving: required after a conviction or no-contest plea; with adjudication withheld, only when the court orders it.

  • Crash-related (BDI TCAC)

    s. 322.0261(1)(a) and (1)(b). Sign-up reason: BDI TCAC.

Required after a conviction or no-contest plea for the offense that caused a crash with a death or an injury needing transport to hospital, or a second crash with $500 or more in damage within two years.

A third crash within 36 months requires a course with behind-the-wheel instruction and a driving assessment. Our online course does not satisfy that notice.

Your deadline: 90 days from the notice

  • 90days

    90 days from your notice

The clock runs from the date you receive the letter.

FLHSMV sends the notice within 10 days after it learns of the court's decision. You have 90 days after receiving it to complete the course. If you miss the deadline, your licence is cancelled until you complete it. Starting the course does not extend the deadline, so start as soon as your letter arrives.
